A UFO causes a head-on car crash at Lake McConaughy late 1940s or early 1950s

(Including an overview of a number of UFO episodes that occurred over a period of several years at  Lake McConaughey and beyond…I have described some of the events in detail so you can get a better idea how the encounters actually happened and how they were intertwined into our normal daily lives.)

Early 1950s: We were traveling east on a somewhat remote gravel road that bordered the north shore of Lake McConaughey. McConaughey Lake is located on the North Platte River, in Western Nebraska. The sky appeared blue gray, as it (solar time) was just after sunset. As we drove up over the crest of a hill, we got startled to see what appeared to have been a head-on collision right ahead of us. We stopped our car just behind the crash and our driver got out of our car to investigate.

Our two families had set up camp at the Otter Creek State Recreation Area Campground that also was located on the north shore of Lake McConaughey. The other family was the same family mentioned in some of my previous stories, including the story explaining when we encountered the illuminated spinning Windowed Saucer at Lake Ogallala which is located immediately below Kingsly Dam, the large dam forming Lake McConaughey. Lake McConaughey is about 25 miles long and nearly 2 miles wide in some places. The Kingsley Dam when it was built, my father told me, was the second largest earth dam in the world. And when it was built, when I was a young child, our family, from the top of a hill, watched the large earth movers haul dirt and deposit it on the dam.

This might have been the same trip as the Lake Ogallala experience, as we kids (a girl and a boy in the other family and my two older sisters and I in our family) were all mid to young teenagers. (It is interesting that I and this particular family, as sell as others, witnessed UFOs near the dam, near the outlet, and at various locations around the lake for many years before and after this particular evening.)

Our fathers had decided they should drink some beer. So, the other father said he would drive to Lemoyne, a small village a few miles east of the Otter Creek Campground, to get the beer.

After the father got out of our car and approached the nearest wrecked car, we noticed a middle aged man was reaching in the driver’s door, as if he were in some way helping the driver of that car. After a short discussion with the man, the other father came back and told us to get out of our car because they were going to need some help. We kids all got out and walked a short distance to the crashed car nearest us. It was a four-door car…possibly a Hudson or something similar.

As I looked in the back seat, I saw two older people slumped down, either unconscious or nearly so. Besides the driver, another older person sat in the front…in the front passenger’s seat. Eventually the other father said we would have to remove at least two of them from the car and place them in the south ditch so they could rest in more comfortable positions.

The man that had been trying to help the driver of this car was the driver of the other car involved in the head-on collision. Yet, it was obvious he was not hurt too bad from the impact of the accident. His car was smashed, wrinkled metal to metal, stuck solidly to this car. Yet, we found later his car was in good enough condition that he could still drive it.

The other father and the man not hurt decided that the man not hurt should go to the nearest telephone and call for help. He left and we all tried to comfort the injured passengers.

We waited for what seemed to be a very long time…until, finally, an ambulance arrived.

After some time, the other father decided that we would not be needed, so we all got in our car and headed toward Lemoyne for the beer.

After getting the beer (or after not getting it because it might have been too late – I don’t remember), we began driving south up a hill just west of Lemoyne, when suddenly our car began to sputter, slow down and stop. We then all began to loose our consciousness. Yet, I can recall talking about it and seeing in the road ahead of us, just before we passed out, lights and craft…at least one or two of them. After some time, I found myself waking and noticed the others were also waking from what seemed to be a deep sleep. We traveled on driving around a south to west curve in the road, when suddenly we saw the lights and craft again. I can’t recall if our car completely stopped this time, but we eventually continued on down the road toward the west, where the scene of the previous accident lay before us.

As we approached the crash site, we noticed that the man, the other driver who had gone to telephone for help, was still there…but the ambulance and others were gone. The man stood across the fence line of the north ditch looking at a strange object resting in the field just ahead of him. What was additionally strange was that the object, what I now know to have been “the Windowed Saucer,” was being illuminated by something above it that we couldn’t see. It seemed as if an invisible light above was illuminating the entire local area. The windows of the windowed saucer also were being illuminated dimly, but within. It all seemed so puzzling no one was able to understand…i.e. what it was and what was happening.

Then, what was most shocking was that we heard a deep male voice speaking from the saucer. However it was such a penetrating voice it seemed to permeate the air around it. The man and the rest of us heard the voice and I have the vague feeling that we had at least a short time loss.

We began talking with the man and he said he had seen the same windowed saucer just over the crest of the hill just before the head-on collision. He swore that he remained on the right side of the road before the accident occurred. But he conjectured that the driver of the other car most likely saw the windowed saucer and the sight of it had distracted him enough at the crest of the hill that he let his car wander toward the left side of the road…ultimately experiencing the head-on collision.

(I can’t recall fully if the voice spoke before or after we talked with the man involved in the crash…or before or after the time loss.)

This all took a significant amount of time. So, after further discussion with the man, the other father decided it was time we return to the campground to inform our other parents about the accident. So we left, leaving the man just standing there staring at the Windowed Saucer.

I can recall arriving at the shore of Lake McConaughey and greeting our parents who were fishing. And I recall we told them about the accident. Then after a significant amount of time, someone pointed out a brilliant light that seemed to be hovering above the lake. It was some distance away and we discussed, also for a time, whether it might be the Moon or something strange that we had never seen before.

Judging its position out in front of us, at that time, I judged that the brilliant light could not have been the Moon because it seemed to me and at least a few others that it was not nearly as far away as the southern shore of Lake McConaughey. At one time it was larger than the Moon and brighter. And, of course, I now strongly suspect we were once again seeing the Windowed Saucer…as I now know the Windowed Saucer sometimes illuminated so brilliantly we couldn’t keep our eyes fixed on it. I also have the vague impression that we all experienced a time loss beginning just after we first saw the strange light hovering over the lake, the time loss lasting a significant amount of time until my last memory of seeing it.

There are many things one could glean from this chain of bizarre UFO experiences. For instance I know this was only one example of many so-called UFO encounters others and I experienced around and near Lake McConaughey…the encounters spanning a period of decades.

For instance, before the encounters above occurred, I recall seeing the Windowed Saucer or “the disc-shaped objects” out over the bay where Otter Creek flows into Lake McConaughey. At that time my sisters were with me and possibly the children of the same other family. We ran southeast to the boat dock to tell our parents. About half way there, as we were running, we saw a smaller version of the Windowed Saucer manifest in a volume of colored atmosphere up and to our right, just above our heads. At this time, I would guess it was approximately 8 to 12 feet away and it definitely was much smaller…only about three to five feet wide. It faded into view and out of view somewhat quickly, at least two or three times. Yet, it was in view for at least the time it took me to look at my sister and tell her what I was seeing and she telling me that we do indeed need to tell our parents.

When we arrived at the boat dock, I recall us telling our parents about encountering the Windowed Saucer. However, I also recall that something else strange happened at the boat dock…as if we again had somehow lost some time. We eventually left the boat dock and joined the other family. And you know the rest of the story above.

Among the wildlife-related encounters that occurred around and near Lake McConaughey were close sightings and manifestations that seemed somewhat directly related to the waterfowl population, the fish habitat, the nature of the lake and dam as it and Lake Ogallala generally and specifically contributed to the welfare of wildlife as well as the benefit of irrigation to farmers along and near the Platte River.

These wildlife and human improvement themes included sightings and relatively short and long close encounters along highways, other lakes and irrigation canals to the east and west borders and the north and south borders of Nebraska. Analyzing the entire scope of my encounters throughout the entire 46 plus years, it seems many of them were related to the fact that my father was the Chief of the Nebraska State Fisheries and Assistant Director of the Nebraska Game And Parks Commission most of his life. It seems obvious all of them were related to the fact that “they,” whoever they truly were, were here to change humankind, just as they told me during one early encounter at 68th and Garland Streets in Lincoln when I was two or three years old.

When I review all of the encounters that I now recall, it seems as if these sort of temporary sightings and unusual interactions with the crafts, objects and voice have followed me everywhere I’ve been though at least the 46 plus years. It seems as if “they,” whoever they truly are, are responsible for my well being or my personal human development, as well as the well being of humankind.

If you have the good fortune to read my books you will discover, as I have, why this might be.
