From Central Archives –
Major Somnath Sharma was the first officer to be awarded the highest military honour in India, the Param Vir Chakra in 1950. He was only 24 when he did. Major Sharma, despite suffering an arm fracture, led his battalion to Budgam in Kashmir in October 1947, to thwart Pakistani infiltration. He lost his life fighting courageously in the same battle.
